Shift in spawning time of the red shrimp Aristaeomorpha foliacea in the Strait of Sicily
The deep-water benthopelagic red shrimp Aristaeomorpha foliacea (Risso, 1827) represents one of the main target species of the trawl fishery in the Strait of Sicily (Fiorentino et al., 2024). Its distribution is typically associated with deep muddy bottoms, which are considered oligotrophic, homeothermic and environmentally stable habitats. These conditions, which promote stable life cycles over time, could, however, be altered by the ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressures on marine environment. The aim of this study is to compare recent information on A. foliacea spawning period in the Strait of Sicily, with the results of the classical study by Ragonese et al. (1995), based on specimens collected during seasonal trawl surveys, in the second half of 1980s. New data were collected between January 2024 and 2026 through monthly sampling, conducted in the waters off Licata (Strait of Sicily) within the Offshore Ibleo Project. Samples, collected from a total of 219 hauls (276 - 598 m depth), were processed in laboratory and data on carapace length (mm), sex and maturity stage were recorded according to MEDITS maturity scale (MEDITS-Handbook No. 9, 2017). Increasing percentages of mature females were observed for both years between spring and summer, although with a marked interannual variability. In addition, a secondary peak of mature females was observed in autumn 2025. Comparison with 1980s data, when a single reproductive peak in summer occurred, suggests a deep change in the phenology of life cycle of A. foliacea with an extension of the reproductive period from spring to autumn.
