Roadkill monitoring in a Mediterranean island: do different methods tell different stories?
Roadkill is the most prominent direct effect of roads on wildlife which have sparked an interest on roadkill monitoring at a global level. The two most widely used roadkill monitoring methods are systematic recording, and the use of citizen science for data collection. In this research, we aim to compare two datasets derived from these two methods, showcasing their strengths and weaknesses for roadkill recording and mitigation planning on the island of Cyprus. Data were extracted from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Cyprus Roadkill Observation System (CyROS), a network of volunteers. Data comparison was conducted through visualisation and statistical analysis. The CyROS dataset is comprised of 1322 wildlife records between 2017-2025, while PWD holds 1555 records for the 2013-2022 period. The CyROS records span more than 140 individual roads while the PWD monitors a total of 27 highways and main roads. Yearly distribution varies between the datasets, while monthly records peak during June for both datasets. Datasets exhibit similar species seasonality pattern and similar density of roadkill events. The number of incidents is correlated with traffic volume. Hedgehogs make up the majority for CyROS, while foxes are more than 40% of the PWD database, with significant numbers of birds and snakes in both. Differences of the two schemes influencing the results are discussed. This research provides valuable insights into strengths and limitations of systematic monitoring vs citizen science for roadkill data collection and utilisation. Suggestions of ways to improve both methods, and extracting, assessing and organising data for design of mitigation measures are included, derived from our analyses.
